Feuch air! (Give it a try!)
There’s something about the ring of a hammer on an anvil that takes you back. Spend a day at the forge at Highland Village and have a go at a trade that was once an everyday part of life in communities across Cape Breton.
Under the guidance of our resident blacksmith, Ian MacCalder, you’ll learn the basics of working with hot iron, from building and tending the coal fire, to heating the metal in the forge, and finally hammering it into shape. You’ll get to work the tools, feel the heat of the forge, and make something with your own two hands to bring home.
Whether you’ve never stood at an anvil before or you’ve had a bit of experience at the forge, Ian will tailor the workshop to your skill level. Come for the craft, stay for the stories, the crackle of the fire, and the sound of iron being shaped the old-fashioned way.

● Participants must be 16 years of age or older and able to lift at least 10 lbs.
● Closed-toe shoes and pants are required. Natural-fibre clothing is strongly recommended.
● You’ll be on your feet for most of the day and working in a hot environment.
● Bring a water bottle and wear something you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
So, if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to work at the forge, here’s your chance. Come on up the hill, roll up your sleeves, and have a go.
There’s nothing quite like making something useful with your own two hands.
